This is how you usually see competitors at a big dog show.

Being judged on how they look and how they walk. But how do they get so well groomed?

Go behind the scenes at America's biggest dog show, Westminster, in New York to find out.

The two-day event draws more than 2,700 competitors from 15 countries and is now in its 139th year.

Doggie dreadlocks

Dogs like this Komondor are groomed backstage to make them look their best when they're in the show ring.

This one seems to have its head in a string bag.

Rolled up ears

Some have their ears rolled up after a good brush. As modelled by this Spaniel.

Tasteful headgear

Other dogs have ears which are too big.

So they have to have special headgear put over them like these chaps; an Afghan Hound, an Italian Greyhound and a Basset Hound.

Wash and dry

Fairly straightforward this one.

This West Highland White Terrier perfectly models the wash, brush and dry technique backstage.

Serious pimping

Toy Poodles are famous for their bum buns (we made that word up) and take a lot of grooming to get ready.

They get sprayed, cleaned, clipped and trimmed, but they do look a bit weird.

Rollers

Yep - these two (a Maltese and a Shih Tzu) have curlers in.

Chalky?

This Whippet seems to be having chalk put on its legs.

Doggie toilet

And of course they can't hold it in, so there's a dog toilet in a nearby hotel.

We're guessing the water hydrants are for the boy dogs.

This one looks a bit camera shy.

And the winners is...

This Beagle called Miss P from Canada was voted best in show.
