German film director Werner Herzog is to bring DBC Pierre's Vernon God Little to the screen in a film adaptation of the 2003 Booker prize-winning novel.
Variety reported that the script will be penned by Andrew Birkin who wrote and directed Ian McEwan's The Cement Garden in 1993.
Set in small-town Texas, Vernon is about a teenager who gets blamed for a high-school shooting.
The novel won the Man Booker prize and Whitbread first novel award in 2003.
The screen adaptation of Vernon will mark a return to fiction for Herzog, 70, who has won numerous national and international awards for his films.
The eclectic film-maker has concentrated on making documentaries in recent years, including Cave of Forgotten Dreams, about the Ardeche cave paintings, and Into the Abyss, a study of Texas's death row.
His last fiction feature was My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done in 2009.
Vernon God Little has been adapted twice for the stage, including at London's Young Vic theatre in 2007, starring BBC One's Merlin star Colin Morgan as Vernon.
The Booker Prize judges described the book as a "coruscating black comedy reflecting our alarm but also our fascination with America".
