US Senator John McCain has written an attack on Russia's president, accusing Vladimir Putin of ruling the country by "corruption, repression and violence".
Mr McCain's letter follows a piece written by President Putin, published by the New York Times last week, in which he lambasted the US and any potential military strikes.
However, as Steve Rosenberg reports from Moscow, the newspaper is extremely hard to find, leading to questions about how influential it will be.
