A Republican member of the US House of Representatives from Florida has been charged with possession of cocaine.

First-term congressman Trey Radel, 37, was arrested for drug possession in Washington DC, on 29 October.

He has now been charged with a misdemeanour and is scheduled to appear in a local court on Wednesday.

He said he was "disappointed" with himself. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 180 days in jail and a $1,000 (£620) fine.

'Face the consequences'

The freshman politician represents several of Florida's Gulf Coast communities, and worked as a radio host prior to being elected to Congress in 2012.

Following word of the charges against him, Mr Radel acknowledged his struggle with alcoholism, saying it led him to "an extremely irresponsible choice".

"I realise the disappointment my family, friends and constituents must feel," he wrote in a statement. "I am disappointed in myself, and I stand ready to face the consequences of my actions."

"However, this unfortunate event does have a positive side," he added. "It offers me an opportunity to seek treatment and counselling."
