The pilot was able to walk away from the crash

The pilot of a small plane that crashed into an unoccupied home in Colorado escaped relatively unhurt and attempted to put out the fire with a garden hose.

The aircraft was on its way to tow a banner advertising an insurance company over a baseball game when its engine apparently malfunctioned.

After impact, the pilot got out of the cockpit and tried to put out the fire before burning fuel forced him away.

He suffered minor injuries from the crash, while the plane was destroyed.

The tail of the plane and a shattered wing were sticking out from the roof and wall of what was left of the home in Northglenn, 10 miles (16km) north of Denver.

Neighbour Shanna Rudd told CNN she and her husband knew something was wrong because the plane was flying so low.

"I saw it go down and then the smoke afterwards," she said. "It was so scary. I've never seen anything like that before."
