"It was 24/7 loud music, or, if they showed appreciation or enjoyment of the music... loud static", said Roberto Villasenor, Tucson Police Department

Police in Arizona say three sisters were held captive in filthy conditions for up to two years by their mother and stepfather in the city of Tucson.

Investigators say two of the girls, aged 12 and 13, escaped and alerted a neighbour after their stepfather tried to attack them with a knife.

Officers then found a 17-year-old locked in her bedroom.

The girls were malnourished and dirty and told the police they had not taken a bath in up to six months.

"They were kept in filthy living conditions separately and told patrol officers that they had not seen each other in almost two years," Tucson police captain Mike Gilooly told reporters.

Loud music

Stepfather Fernando Richter, 34 , and mother Sophia Richter, 32, have been charged with emotional and physical abuse and three counts of kidnapping. The stepfather was also charged with sex abuse.

The girls were allegedly held under 24-hour surveillance, with an elaborate alarm system and soundproofing of rooms.

"Their movements were controlled - when, where and how they went to the bathroom, when they were fed," said Tucson Police Chief Roberto Villasenor.

Loud music was continuously played in the girls' bedrooms and towels had been stuffed into ducts and under the doors in an apparent attempt to muffle sound, Police Chief Villasenor told a news conference.

The girls have been removed from the house and are under the care of child protection services.

The two younger girls escaped through a window on Tuesday after their stepfather tried to break down a door while brandishing a knife, police said.

Investigators are examining a diary kept by the older sister during her alleged captivity.

They are also trying to establish if and where the girls went to school.

During a brief court appearances on Wednesday, neither parent entered a plea.

US agrees to pay $50m after 'piracy'

28 November 2013 Last updated at 07:34 ET

The US government has agreed to pay $50m (£31m) after it was said to have pirated "thousands" of copies of military software.

Apptricity, based in Texas, has provided logistics programs to the army since 2004.

The company said it had discovered last year the software had been installed on many more machines than had been licensed.

The Department of Justice has not commented on the settlement.

The Dallas Morning News reported a DoJ spokeswoman had confirmed the agreement, but would not give more details.

Apptricity's software allows the military to track the movements of soldiers as well as key supplies.

It has also been used during relief efforts, most notably in Haiti following the 2010 earthquake.

According to court documents filed in 2012, the deal with the military meant up to 500 named users could access the software.

Presentation revelation

Apptricity later estimated that 9,000 users were accessing the program, in addition to the 500 that had been paid for.

The unauthorised copying only came to light after a US Army official mentioned "thousands" of devices running the software during a presentation on technology.

Apptricity called for $224m (£137m) to be paid to cover costs.

The settlement of $50m falls some way short - but in a statement the company said Apptricity would spend the sum on expanding the company.

"Apptricity is now incredibly energised to use the settlement resolution as a catalyst for aggressive investment in our team, our solutions and our untapped market opportunities," said Randy Lieberman, Apptricity's chief financial officer.

In recent years, the US government has stepped up efforts to combat piracy, announcing a wide-ranging strategy for clamping down in 2010.

"Piracy is theft, clean and simple," remarked vice-president Joe Biden at the time.

New delay for US health law website

Obamacare explained in 75 seconds

The Obama administration has announced another delay to its healthcare law, this time to online medical insurance for small businesses.

The marketplace website allowing employers to buy health coverage for their workers will be put off by one year until November 2014.

Ongoing problems with Healthcare.gov, beset by glitches since its 1 October launch, were blamed for the delay.

It is the latest setback for the law commonly known as Obamacare.

Enrolment for small businesses was originally meant to start in October, until the administration delayed it by a month. On Wednesday it pushed that deadline back again, by a full year.

Administration officials told reporters in a conference call that employers who want to buy healthcare plans for their workers would need to go through an insurance company or agent, rather than through a government website.

Officials said this would allow employers to buy coverage while avoiding slowing down technical repairs on the federal website, which has been plagued by errors.

The White House has promised the website will be fixed by the end of November.

Government health spokeswoman Julie Bataille said on Wednesday the portal was now handling 25,000 users at the same time.

She said it was on track to meet its goal of handling double that number by Saturday.

Obamacare setbacks

  • Nov 27: Year's delay in online insurance enrolment for small businesses
  • Nov 26: Spanish-language sign-up tool is postponed until December
  • Nov 22: Enrolment deadline for individuals is pushed back a week in December
  • Nov 14: Obama announces insurers can keep customers on existing plans for another year
  • Oct 23: Deadline for individuals to avoid penalties is pushed back six weeks to March 2014
  • July: Businesses with over 50 workers given until 2015 to provide insurance or pay a penalty

"We have a lot of work left to do in the next few days," she added.

But she cautioned that some malfunctions may persist on the website beyond the end of this week.

"There will be times after November 30th when Healthcare.gov does not function properly," said Ms Bataille.

Republicans, who have launched countless legal and political challenges to the law since its passage in 2010, seized on the latest postponement.

"With each passing day, it's clear how much worse ObamaCare is than a website full of glitches," Republican National Committee chair Reince Priebus said in a statement.

The online portal was established under the health law to enable consumers who do not get medical cover through their employers or via government benefits to shop for coverage.

But technical problems - including slow page loads and outages - have resulted in much lower-than-anticipated initial enrolment rates.

Considered the largest overhaul of the US healthcare system since the 1960s, it aims to extend health insurance coverage to the estimated 15% of the US population who lack it.

Support for Obamacare, whose official name is the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, has recently wobbled even within the president's own party.

Some congressional Democrats are said to be worried that the mounting negative headlines could hurt their 2014 re-election chances.

Diplomat 'killer' captured in Mali

28 November 2013 Last updated at 12:40 ET

A Malian man who escaped from prison in Niger where he was serving a sentence for killing four Saudi tourists, and allegedly assassinated a US diplomat has been recaptured, officials say.

French soldiers arrested Alhassane Ould Mohamed, also known as "Cheibani", in northern Mali on Tuesday.

He was among 22 prisoners who escaped from jail in June during an attack by suspected Islamist militants.

Following the mass breakout, the US unsealed an indictment for his arrest.

It said he was wanted for the murder of US diplomat William Bultemeier who was shot in Niger's capital, Niamey, as he left a restaurant with colleagues in December 2000.

A reward of $20,000 (£12,235) was also announced in September for information leading to his capture.

He was serving a 20-year sentence in Niger for the murder of four Saudi citizens who were travelling with a Saudi prince on a hunting trip in 2009.

Mali's chief prosecutor Daniel Tessougue said that Cheibani, sometimes also called Cheibane Ould Hama, was arrested with three other people, the Associated Press news agency reports.

According to the Reuters news agency, Niger's Justice Minister Marou Mohamed said Cheibani was captured in a hideout between the towns of Gao and Kidal following a tip-off from Niger security officials.

French forces, along with troops from West Africa, helped oust al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb militants and their allies from northern Mali earlier this year.

They had occupied the vast desert area in the wake of the chaos that followed a coup in March 2012.

NSA 'plan to shame web-porn users'

27 November 2013 Last updated at 08:26 ET

The US authorities have studied online sexual activity and suggested exposing porn site visits as a way to discredit people who spread radical views, the Huffington Post news site has reported.

It published a document, leaked by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden, identifying two Muslims said to be vulnerable to accusations of "online promiscuity".

An official said this was unsurprising.

But campaign group Privacy International called it "frightening".

"Without discussing specific individuals, it should not be surprising that the US government uses all of the lawful tools at our disposal to impede the efforts of valid terrorist targets who seek to harm the nation and radicalise others to violence," Shawn Turner, director of public affairs for National Intelligence, told the Huffington Post.

Microsoft is considering rolling out new encryption initiatives, according to a report in the Washington Post.

It says Microsoft is concerned about a programme called Muscular alleged to involve the NSA and GCHQ working together to intercept data from the private cables connecting companies' computer servers.

"These allegations are very disturbing," said Brad Smith, general counsel at Microsoft.

"If they are true these actions amount to hacking and seizure of private data and in our view are a breach of the protection guaranteed by the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution."

Google and Yahoo have already announced similar encryption moves.

By digitally scrambling the information, the companies would make it harder for the agencies to make sense of intercepted files, potentially making the cyber-spies more reliant on formal requests.

However, both the NSA and GCHQ are also known to be working on counter-encryption efforts.

Privacy International said: "This is not the first time we've seen states use intimate and private information of an individual who holds views the government doesn't agree with, and exploit this information to undermine an individual's message."

The report came shortly after a group of United Nations experts adopted a "right to privacy" resolution.

It will be passed by the UN's General Assembly before the end of the year, but is largely symbolic since it is not legally binding.

The UN's Human Rights Committee said it was "deeply concerned at the negative impact" the interception of data "including extraterritorial surveillance" could have "in particular when carried out on a mass scale".

'Young girls'

The latest of Mr Snowden's leaked documents is dated October 2012 and says it was distributed by the office of the director of the NSA to other US government officials.

It names six Muslims whom it describes as "prominent, globally resonating foreign radicalisers" about whom surveillance efforts had revealed potential "vulnerabilities that can be exploited".

It says the information is largely based on gathered "Sunni extremist communications", including material sourced by the FBI.

"Some of the vulnerabilities, if exposed, would likely call into question a radicaliser's devotion to the jihadist cause, leading to the degradation or loss of his authority," it says.

One example is evidence of the target "viewing sexually explicit material online or using sexually explicit persuasive language when communicating with inexperienced young girls".

Others include proof of the target:

  • using donations to pay personal expenses
  • charging exorbitant speaking fees
  • using questionable sources and contradictory language in public messages

None of the six individuals who appear in the report are accused of being directly involved in terrorism.

But the document says one of the two said to have been involved in "online promiscuity" had previously been imprisoned for inciting hatred against non-Muslims, and the other had been involved in promoting al-Qaeda propaganda.

Of the four other targets, one is said to be vulnerable to being exposed for being "attracted to fame" and another for having a "glamorous lifestyle".

Privacy International spokesman Mike Rispoli said: "What is frightening about the NSA's capabilities are that they collect massive amounts of information on everyone, including your political beliefs, contacts, relationships and internet histories.

"While these documents suggest this type of personal attacks are targeted in nature, do not forget that the NSA is conducting mass surveillance on the entire world and collecting a vast amount of information on nearly everyone."

A spokeswoman for the NSA's UK equivalent - GCHQ - declined to comment on details of the Huffington Post's report.

But she highlighted the UK government's Counter-Terrorism Strategy, which discusses using the internet to gather evidence against individuals in order to challenge terrorist propaganda.

"All of GCHQ's work is carried out in accordance with a strict legal and policy framework which ensures that its activities are authorised, necessary and proportionate, and that there is rigorous oversight," she added.

'Smelly' hot sauce factory curbed

27 November 2013 Last updated at 10:53 ET

A California judge has temporarily curbed production of the popular sriracha Asian-style hot sauce after residents of a Los Angeles suburb complained of the factory's odour.

The fumes emitted from Huy Fong Foods' factory in Irwindale are "extremely annoying, irritating and offensive to the senses", Judge Robert O'Brien said.

He ordered the company to cease any operations that cause the odours.

The factory churns 100 million lb (45.4 million kg) of chilli pepper a year.

Tear-inducing odours

Mr O'Brien did not specify the types of actions required by his ruling, and stopped short of ordering the factory to shut down entirely.

Irwindale City Attorney Fred Galante called it "a strong ruling that acknowledges and is reflective of the concerns that the community has raised about the health impacts of the odour", Reuters news agency reported.

The city of Irwindale sued the hot sauce manufacturer on 21 October after residents complained of health ailments - including heartburn, asthma and nosebleeds - as a result of the factory's odours.

Mr O'Brien found there was a "lack of credible evidence" linking such health problems to the factory, but said the city was "likely to prevail" if the fumes were labelled a public nuisance.

His injunction is an interim measure while the court considers the city's lawsuit, which is not expected to go to trial for several months.

Huy Fong Foods founder David Tran says his company, which made about $85m last year, has been working with the city to reduce the smell.

But he has said he will not change the type of chilli pepper used, as it makes for a better hot sauce.

"If it doesn't smell, we can't sell," Mr Tran has said. "If the city shuts us down, the price of sriracha will jump a lot."

Auctioneer James Rylands puts 'Misty' under the hammer

A diplodocus skeleton has been sold at auction for £400,000 ($652,000).

The 17m-long (56ft) dinosaur was found in a quarry in Wyoming, US, and then assembled in Rotterdam. It is thought to be one of only six relatively complete specimens in the world.

An undisclosed institution bought the skeleton, which auction officials said would be going on public display.

The Natural History Museum had ruled itself out of bidding for the dinosaur before the auction in West Sussex.

The diplodocus, nicknamed Misty, was discovered by the teenage sons of German palaeontologist Raimund Albersdoerfer.

They had travelled to the US to help their father dig up a different skeleton before being allowed to try to find their own fossils. It was then they came across the dinosaur.

'Sorry to see her go'

The sale took place at Summers Place Auctions, in Billingshurst. Misty was sold there as the auction's curator, Errol Fuller, knew Mr Albersdoerfer.

Rupert van der Werff, from the auction house, said it was a "truly tremendous object".

He said: "I'm absolutely thrilled. It has been an awful lot of work and a very exciting project, and to finally get to this final conclusion - we are delighted.

"I can't tell you who bought it but it is going on public display."

Before the auction, the Natural History Museum, in London, said it would not be bidding for the dinosaur despite its own diplodocus only being a cast of one displayed in Pittsburgh.

And that skeleton cast is itself made up of two different diplodocuses.

Speaking before the sale, auctioneer James Rylands said: "We will be sorry to see her go - the downside of being an auctioneer is that once you've sold something you very seldom get to see it again.

"Hopefully this won't be the case with Misty. It's more likely to be bought by a museum.

"There's a fast-developing museum market in Asia and the Middle East.

"The other big thing is upmarket shopping malls or hotels, especially in the US, because of their high ceilings and atriums.

"Within the context of a shopping mall you can make a real 'wow' statement."

UAE 'holding US man for spoof video'

28 November 2013 Last updated at 10:51 ET

A rights group says a US man is being held in a maximum security prison in UAE accused of endangering national security after posting a parody video about youth culture in Dubai.

Shezanne Cassim, a consultant, is the first foreign national to be charged under a 2012 cybercrimes law, says the Emirates Centre for Human Rights.

Mr Cassim has been held since April without a trial date, says the centre.

It says the law has also been used to prosecute local political activists.

A number of other foreign nationals who took part in the video have also been detained, says the London-based Emirates Centre for Human Rights.

Expatriates will be concerned that if they make a joke about life in Dubai that they could end up in prison like Cassim"

End Quote Rori Donaghy Emirates Centre for Human Rights

Shezanne Cassim, 29, moved to Dubai in 2006 after graduating from the University of Minnesota, and later became a business consultant in the aviation division of PricewaterhouseCoopers, said his brother Shervon.

An American citizen, born in Sri Lanka, he was arrested in April 2013 and had his passport seized by the authorities in Dubai, says the Emirates Centre for Human Rights.

The centre say the charges against Mr Cassim include violation of Article 28 of the cybercrimes law, which provides for imprisonment and a fine of up to 1m dirhams ($272,000) for anyone who uses information technology to publish caricatures that are "liable to endanger state security and its higher interests or infringe on public order".

'Silly video'

The 19-minute video, entitled Satwa Combat School, was posted on YouTube on 12 October, 2012.

It opens with the explanatory text: "The following events are fictional and no offence was intended to the people of Satwa or UAE."

Set in the Satwa district of Dubai, the video is a mock documentary about the Satwa Combat School, a fictional establishment in which students are taught to throw sandals as a form of weapon, and seek aid through the social media when in need of back-up.

In a statement, Mr Cassim's family said it poked fun at teenagers in Dubai who styled themselves as "gangstas" but were more known for their mild behaviour.

Shezanne Cassim had been refused bail on several occasions, said his family, adding that he was due to return to court on 16 December.

The director of the Emirates Centre for Human Rights, Rori Donaghy, said the charges against Shezanne Cassim had "worrying implications".

"Expatriates will be concerned that if they make a joke about life in Dubai that they could end up in prison like Cassim," he said.

"Cassim has been thrown in prison for posting a silly video on YouTube and authorities must immediately release him as he has clearly not endangered state security in any way."

The Emirates Centre for Human Rights said the case "raised a number of concerns about free expression in the United Arab Emirates", including the fact that a law passed in November 2012 was being used retrospectively.

The authorities in the United Arab Emirates have not commented on the case so far.

Balloons soar at Thanksgiving parade

28 November 2013 Last updated at 16:55 ET

High winds dropped just enough to allow gigantic balloons to follow tradition by joining in the annual New York Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

SpongeBob SquarePants, Snoopy, Spider-Man and friends took off as the floats wound their way through Manhattan.

Some 3.5 million spectators were expected to line the route. Another 50 million usually watch it on television.

Thanksgiving Day celebrates the harvest and blessings of the past year, and launches the US holiday season.

New York Police Department decided on Thursday morning that the winds were mild enough for the 16 giant character balloons to be used in the parade, which is now in its 87th year.

The worst of a wet and blustery storm that drenched the US East Coast in recent days passed.

Store protests

The city introduced new parade safety rules after a 1997 accident in which a windblown Cat in the Hat inflatable knocked over a light pole that landed on a woman, seriously injuring her.

City regulations prohibit the giant balloons from flying when sustained winds top 23mph (37km/h), and gusts exceed 34mph.

The foul weather earlier this week led to hundreds of flight delays at a time when some 43 million Americans travel to be with loved ones, but did not cause the widely feared gridlock.

More US stores opened than ever before, luring in shoppers a day ahead of the traditional start of the festive shopping season, known as Black Friday.

Some eager bargain hunters began camping outside retail outlets on Tuesday this week. About 140 million people are expected to shop over the four-day weekend, according to the National Retail Federation.

But there have been protests and an online petition by critics who say it is wrong to separate workers from their families on Thanksgiving.

'Thanksgivukkah'

A group of Whole Foods employees held a strike in Chicago on Wednesday to demonstrate against some of the stores opening on the holiday. Walmart has also faced a backlash over its decision to open its doors on Thanksgiving.

The manager of a Pizza Hut franchise in the US state of Indiana, Tony Rohr, lost his job when he refused to make his staff to work on Thursday. Following an outcry, the fast-food chain reinstated him.

Obama: "By the power vested in me... Popcorn, you have a full reprieve from cranberry sauce and stuffing"

On Wednesday, President Barack Obama carried out the traditional US presidential Thanksgiving duty: pardoning of the turkey.

Two 38-lb (17-kg) specimens, Popcorn and Caramel, were granted a special last-minute reprieve allowing them to live out their days on George Washington's estate in Mount Vernon, Virginia.

Forty-six million other turkeys will not be so lucky - that is how many of the fowl are expected to be consumed across the US on Thursday.

Thanksgiving has been marked for hundreds of years, and is generally thought to commemorate a 1621 harvest feast the US Pilgrims shared with Indians after settling at Plymouth, in what is now Massachusetts.

In a rare coincidence, this year it occurs at the same time as the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, which has led to the coining of the name Thanksgivukkah.

That last happened in 1888 and will not happen again for more than 70,000 years, according to a commonly cited calculation.

Biden to raise concerns in China

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 28 November 2013 | 20.24

27 November 2013 Last updated at 12:10 ET

US Vice-President Joe Biden will convey to China US concerns over its declaration of an air defence zone over disputed islands in the East China Sea, the White House has said.

On a long-planned trip to Asia next week, he will also visit Japan and South Korea, the White House said.

On Saturday, China declared aircraft crossing the zone must obey its rules or face "emergency defensive measures".

US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel called the move "potentially destabilizing".

'Unsettling' behaviour

China's attempted power play over the disputed islands is another example of its struggle to wield influence in the region "

End Quote PJ Crowley Former Obama administration Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs

On Wednesday, Mr Hagel reaffirmed that a longstanding mutual defence treaty with Japan also applies to the disputed East China Sea islands at the heart of the tension between China and Japan.

The islands, known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, have been a sore point between the two Asian powers for decades.

The new air zone, announced by China on Saturday, overlaps with an air zone set out by Japan and covers islands that Japan controls.

Japan has already lodged a strong protest over what it said was an "escalation" by China.

Mr Hagel spoke with Japan Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera, commending the Japanese government for "exercising appropriate restraint" in the wake of China's decision to declare the air defence identification zone.

He also "assured Minister Onodera that US military operations will not in any way change as a result of China's announcement, noting that recent routine and long-planned US flight operations have already occurred as normal", a Pentagon spokesman said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Mr Biden will embark on 2 December on a week-long diplomatic mission to discuss what a senior Obama administration official called "an emerging pattern of behaviour by China that is unsettling to China's own neighbours and raising questions about how China operates in international space and how China deals with areas of disagreement".

"The visit to China creates an opportunity for the vice-president to discuss directly with policymakers in Beijing this issue, to convey our concerns directly and to seek clarity regarding the Chinese intentions in making this move at this time," the official said, referring to China's declaration.

In its statement announcing the air defence zone, the Chinese defence ministry said aircraft crossing the zone must report a flight plan, "maintain two-way radio communications", and "respond in a timely and accurate manner" to identification inquiries.

"China's armed forces will adopt defensive emergency measures to respond to aircraft that do not co-operate in the identification or refuse to follow the instructions," the statement said.

'Regional tensions'

The US - which has more than 70,000 troops in Japan and South Korea - had previously said it would not abide by the Chinese-imposed zone.

The US has already flown two B-52 bombers over the islands in defiance of the new Chinese rules.

The unarmed aircraft took off from Guam on Monday and were part of "normal procedures", according to defence officials.

Former Obama administration Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs PJ Crowley called the US flight "undoubtedly reassuring to many in the region concerned about a more assertive China.

"China's attempted power play over the disputed islands is another example of its struggle to wield influence in the region but consistently doing so in ways that are advantageous to the United States," he told the BBC.

Taiwan, which also claims the islands, has expressed regret at the Chinese move and promised that its military would take measures to protect national security.

Australia has also expressed opposition over the zone.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop summoned the Chinese ambassador on Tuesday, saying "the timing and manner" of China's announcement were "unhelpful in light of current regional tensions".

Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airlines have said they will stop filing flight plans demanded by China on routes through the zone following a request from the Japanese government.

But Singapore Airlines and Australia's Qantas have both said they will abide by the new rules.

Bieber in Australia graffiti row

27 November 2013 Last updated at 22:55 ET

Singer Justin Bieber has been asked to clean up graffiti left on a hotel wall in Australia.

The singer spray-painted cartoon faces on an external wall of a Gold Coast hotel earlier this week. He is currently touring Australia.

The hotel said it was pleased to have Bieber's artwork on their wall. However, Gold Coast City Council said it would order the graffiti's removal.

Earlier this month, Bieber was charged with defacing a building in Brazil.

The hotel, QT Gold Coast, said in a response to a comment on its Facebook page: "We are stoked to have Justin Bieber's artwork on our wall."

It added that it had given Bieber permission to paint on the wall.

However, Gold Coast City Council said that while the graffiti was on a private property, it was in public view and an eyesore.

"The city has a zero tolerance approach to graffiti," a mayoral spokesman told the BBC. "The mayor will contact the hotel to say that if Justin Bieber does not want to use the free graffiti removal kit left with him, then the hotel is expected to use it."

"If not, we will send council compliance officers to ensure the mess is taken care of."

Earlier, Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tait described Bieber's behaviour as "really silly".

"Just come and clean it up and we'll be happy with you. Alternatively come and sing at our mayoral Christmas carols on 7 December for an hour and I'll let you go."

OJ Simpson loses US retrial bid

27 November 2013 Last updated at 03:22 ET

US ex-sports star OJ Simpson has lost his bid for a retrial over his armed robbery and kidnapping conviction.

Simpson, who was jailed for up to 33 years for the September 2007 incident, argued for a new trial on the grounds his lawyer had botched his defence.

However, a judge ruled that "all grounds in the petition lack merit and, consequently, are denied".

Simpson's lawyers said the 66-year-old was disappointed but would appeal against the verdict.

Ex-OJ Simpson lawyer: "He knew he had screwed up, he knew there were guns in the room"

Simpson was jailed for between nine and 33 years for his attempts to take back photos and footballs he believed had been stolen from him.

He was accompanied by five other men when he seized the goods from memorabilia dealers at the Palace Station Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Simpson says he should be given a new trial because his lawyer Yale Galanter had given him bad legal advice and failed to represent him effectively.

Mr Galanter rejected the claims. He denied approving Simpson's decision to retrieve the memorabilia, and told a court that Simpson knew his associates had guns when they went to the Nevada hotel.

He also denied failing to tell the former star NFL running back-turned-actor about plea-bargain offers.

Mr Galanter said he felt vindicated by the ruling.

"As OJ's lawyer and confidante, it was gut-wrenching for me to have to be in a position to defend my strategy and efforts on his behalf as his lawyer and testify against my client,'' Mr Galanter told The Associated Press news agency.

Simpson is facing at least another four years in prison.

His lawyer Patricia Palm told AP: "We're confident that when we get to the right court we'll get relief because he deserves relief, because he didn't get a fair trial.''

Simpson was famously acquitted of the murder of his former wife and her friend in Los Angeles in 1995.

US airline merger cleared by judge

27 November 2013 Last updated at 13:44 ET

A US federal bankruptcy judge has ruled in favour of a proposed merger between US Airways and American Airlines which would form the world's biggest airline.

It was the last hurdle the two firms needed to clear for the merger to proceed.

American Airlines said it now expects the deal to be completed by 9 December.

Earlier this month, the two airlines settled an anti-trust suit brought by the US Justice Department.

The Justice Department sued to stop the merger in August, saying it would reduce competition and result in higher prices for consumers.

As part of the settlement, American Airlines and US Airways agreed to give up slots at several US airports, including Reagan National Airport in Washington DC and LaGuardia Airport in New York City.

Those slots are to be given to low-cost airline carriers like JetBlue and Southwest.

American Airlines filed for bankruptcy protection in 2011. The company says it expects to emerge out of bankruptcy once the merger is complete.

Shares in US Airways were up slightly after the ruling was announced.

On 6 December, US Airways is expected to stop trading. Then, on 9 December, the new American Airlines Group (AAL) is scheduled to start trading on the Nasdaq exchange.

Storm dampens Thanksgiving getaway

27 November 2013 Last updated at 18:51 ET

A winter storm that had threatened Thanksgiving travel gridlock on the US East Coast has so far proven less troublesome than originally feared.

High winds and rain have delayed hundreds of flights but have failed to cause commuting misery on one of the busiest travel days of the year.

A National Weather Service official called it a "fairly typical storm for this time of year".

More than 43 million Americans will travel during the holiday.

The storm, which developed on the West Coast over the weekend and has been blamed for nearly a dozen deaths, may still dump heavy snow on parts of the East Coast.

Icy roads

About 6in (15cm) of snow is forecast for parts of West Virginia and western Pennsylvania, while up to 1ft could fall in a pocket of upstate New York.

More than 250 flights were delayed on Wednesday along the East Coast, far fewer than the thousands originally predicted.

Travellers had been braced for long waits at the airport, but many were left pleasantly surprised.

  • Americans will eat 46m of the birds at Thanksgiving, almost 3lb (1.4kg) per person
  • At an average weight of 16lb each, last year's Thanksgiving turkeys weighed 736m lb in total.
  • Americans spend about $875m (£550m) buying turkeys for Thanksgiving
  • About 31% of the turkeys eaten annually in the US will be consumed during the holiday

"We thought it would be busier here but there've been no lines, and it has been really quiet all morning," Katie Fleisher told the Associated Press news agency at Boston's Logan airport.

But meteorologists warned that falling temperatures could create icy road conditions for those who put off travel until Wednesday evening.

The Boston area is forecast to face 60mph (97km/h) winds. And the city of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania state has been placed under flood watch.

The storm is also threatening a time-honoured Thanksgiving tradition: the New York Macy's Thanksgiving parade.

New safety rules following a 1997 accidental death from a windblown balloon could prevent their use on Thursday if gusts are too high.

Thanksgiving has been marked for hundreds of years, and is generally thought to commemorate a 1621 harvest feast the pilgrims shared with Indians after settling at Plymouth, in what is now Massachusetts.

The modern festival sees millions of people travel to be with family, eat turkey feasts, watch NFL football matches and - in recent years - plan or even begin their assault on the holiday sales.

Arizona couple 'held girls captive'

28 November 2013 Last updated at 00:31 ET
Fernando Richter, 34, and Sophia Richter, 32

Please turn on JavaScript. Media requires JavaScript to play.

US sees slowdown in house price rise

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 27 November 2013 | 20.24

26 November 2013 Last updated at 10:20 ET

The pace of US house price rises slowed in September, as higher mortgage rates and concern about a government shutdown weighed on the market.

The closely-watched S&P/Case Shiller index saw a 0.7% price rise, against a 1.3% gain from July-to-August.

Case Shiller measures single-family home prices in 20 cities. Rises slowed in 19 cities, while one saw a fall.

Despite the slowdown, prices are still 13.3% up on September 2012, the fastest gain for more than seven years.

Prices rose 1.3% in Las Vegas, compared with a 2.9% month-on-month gain in August. Home prices rose just 0.2% in Tampa, Florida, after a 1.8% gain in August. Charlotte, in North Carolina, was the only city to see a price fall.

Meanwhile, US developers received approval in October to build apartments at the fastest pace in five years, according to data from the Commerce Department.

Permits to build houses and apartments were approved at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.034 million, a 6.2% rise on the September rate of 974,000 and the fastest since June 2008.

Nearly all of the increase was for multi-family homes, a sector of residential construction popular in the rentals market.

Permits for single-family houses, which make up roughly two-thirds of the market, rose 0.8% to 620,000. That was slightly below the August pace of 627,000.

Confidence in the housing market slowed in the run-up to the partial US government shutdown in October, according to a survey by the National Association of Home Builders.

Rising home loan rates have also led to caution among buyers. Fixed mortgage rates have risen almost a full percentage point since late May, when borrowing costs were near record lows.

High court to hear health law case

26 November 2013 Last updated at 13:36 ET

The US Supreme Court has said it will hear a Christian-owned company's challenge to a requirement in President Barack Obama's healthcare law that employers cover workers' contraception.

The owners of Hobby Lobby, a chain of craft supply shops, say the requirement violates their religious beliefs.

But the White House says women, not their bosses, should make decisions about their own healthcare.

The health law has been beset by legal challenges since it passed in 2010.

Oral arguments will be heard next year.

'Committed evangelical Christians'

The Supreme Court will hear two cases involving Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood Specialities Corp, out of nearly 40 suits in the federal court system challenging the contraception coverage mandate.

Hobby Lobby, an arts and crafts chain with 13,000 full-time employees, won in lower court rulings.

Mennonite-owned wood cabinet manufacturer Conestoga Wood Specialties Corp, which employs 950 people, lost its suit in lower courts.

The companies are contesting a provision of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that requires most employers who offer health insurance to provide a range of preventative health benefits, including birth-control.

The two businesses object to different types of birth-control, but both assert protections under the 1993 Religious Freedom Restoration Act.

The owners of Hobby Lobby, David Green, Barbara Green and several relatives, describe themselves as "committed evangelical Christians" and say their religious beliefs "forbid them from participating in, providing access to, paying for... or otherwise supporting abortion-causing drugs and devices".

In a court filing, Hobby Lobby says the requirement that it provide coverage for two birth-control drugs known as Plan B and Ella "runs roughshod over the Green family's religious beliefs" because they "could cause an abortion".

The Obama administration has challenged Hobby Lobby's refusal to comply with the law's contraception requirement, arguing that while churches and other religious organisations are exempt, for-profit companies are not.

"The administration has already acted to ensure no church or similar religious institution will be forced to provide contraception coverage and has made a commonsense accommodation for non-profit religious organizations that object to contraception on religious grounds," White House press secretary Jay Carney wrote in a statement released on Tuesday.

"These steps protect both women's health and religious beliefs, and seek to ensure that women and families - not their bosses or corporate CEOs - can make personal health decisions based on their needs and their budgets."

Troubled rollout

The Affordable Care Act, known by critics and supporters as Obamacare, has been subject to countless legal and political challenges from Republicans and conservatives since its passage.

Considered the largest overhaul of the US healthcare system since the 1960s, it aims to extend health insurance coverage to the estimated 15% of the US population who lack it.

The Supreme Court has already ruled on the law. In 2012, it affirmed the constitutionality of the act's central provision, a requirement that most individuals who do not receive health insurance from the government or their employers purchase it or face a fine.

Compounding the political challenges, federal and state health insurance marketplace websites launched on 1 October have been plagued by glitches, resulting in unexpectedly low initial enrolment numbers.

Political support even within Mr Obama's Democratic Party has waned amid revelations that insurance companies have cancelled millions of Americans' medical insurance policies because they did not meet the strict requirements under the healthcare overhaul.

That was despite the president's promise that people would be able to keep their existing plans.

Many Democrats in Congress are said to be worried that the law's problematic rollout could hurt their 2014 re-election chances.

US bombers challenge China air zone

26 November 2013 Last updated at 14:35 ET

The US has flown two B-52 bombers over disputed islands in the East China Sea in defiance of new Chinese air defence rules, officials say.

China set up its "air defence identification zone" on Saturday insisting that aircraft obey its rules or face "emergency defensive measures".

A Pentagon spokesman said the planes had followed "normal procedures".

The islands, known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, are a source of rising tension between the two nations.

China's unilateral establishment of an air defence identification zone demonstrates President Xi Jinping's resolve to defend China's territorial integrity"

End Quote Alexander Neill International Institute for Strategic Studie

Japan has dismissed the Chinese defence zone as "not valid at all" and two of its biggest airlines announced on Tuesday they would heed a request from the government in Tokyo not to implement the new rules.

'Normal procedures'

US Colonel Steve Warren at the Pentagon said Washington had "conducted operations in the area of the Senkakus".

"We have continued to follow our normal procedures, which include not filing flight plans, not radioing ahead and not registering our frequencies," he said.

There had been no response from China, he added.

The aircraft, which were unarmed, had taken off from Guam on Monday and the flight was part of a regular exercise in the area, US defence officials said. Both planes later returned to Guam.

The US - which has more than 70,000 troops in Japan and South Korea - had previously said it would not abide by the Chinese-imposed zone.

No-one should be surprised that the US has acted as it has. Washington's first reaction to China's unilateral extension of its airspace was robust.

The idea that Washington was going to start filing flight plans with China before flying over the East China Sea was a non-starter.

But this is more than just a squabble over flight rules.

Washington is watching China's military build up, its arguments with neighbours, and its "blue-water" ambitions with alarm.

For seven decades the US has been the dominant military power in the region. China has given Washington notice that change is afoot.

Peaceful management of that change is one of the great strategic challenges of the 21st Century.

US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel called it a "destabilising attempt to alter the status quo in the region". The White House said it was "unnecessarily inflammatory".

Japan has already lodged a strong protest over what it said was an "escalation" by China.

Taiwan, which also claims the islands, expressed regret at the Chinese move and promised that its military would take measures to protect national security.

In its statement announcing the air defence zone on Saturday, the Chinese defence ministry said aircraft must report a flight plan, "maintain two-way radio communications", and "respond in a timely and accurate manner" to identification inquiries.

"China's armed forces will adopt defensive emergency measures to respond to aircraft that do not co-operate in the identification or refuse to follow the instructions," the statement said.

Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airlines said on Tuesday they would stop filing flight plans demanded by China on routes through the zone following a request from the Japanese government.

Singapore Airlines and Australia's Qantas have both said they will abide by the new rules.

However, Australia summoned the Chinese ambassador on Tuesday to express opposition over the zone.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said "the timing and manner" of China's announcement were "unhelpful in light of current regional tensions".

US warning to citizens going to NI

26 November 2013 Last updated at 15:46 ET Continue reading the main story

US citizens have been advised to be extra vigilant when travelling to Northern Ireland.

Security checkpoints have been stepped up in Belfast after a car bomb partially exploded outside a shopping centre. No-one was injured.

Police said the pre-Christmas checkpoints would be "random, unpredictable and short".

The US Consulate General in Belfast urged Americans to "avoid suspicious activity, vehicles or packages".

It also said US citizens should try to stay clear of areas where demonstrations are taking place, and "exercise caution in the vicinity of any parades or protests".

"The UK government and Police Service of Northern Ireland continue to assess the threat of terrorism in Northern Ireland to be severe.

"Most attempted attacks are aimed at law enforcement or military personnel or facilities, but there is risk to anyone in the vicinity of such an attack. We urge US citizens to maintain situational awareness and avoid any suspicious activity, vehicles, or packages.

"Throughout 2013, a number of protests in and around Belfast have been characterised by violence aimed primarily at the police.

"Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. We recommend that US citizens avoid the areas where such demonstrations are occurring if possible, and, as always, exercise caution in the vicinity of any parades or protests."

With the increased security presence in the run-up to Christmas, traders in Belfast have been assured by a senior policeman that the operation will be "sensitive" to their needs.

"There will be checkpoints - but they will be random, they will be unpredictable and they will be for short periods of time," said Chief Supt Alan McCrum.

"Belfast is open for business. Belfast is a safe place to shop and the police in Belfast will ensure that it remains safe not just now, not just over Christmas, but for the months that lie ahead."

Chief Supt McCrum said he would be regularly meeting traders and retail groups to get their views on the security operation.

He called on the public to be "extra vigilant" and to report anything suspicious to the police.

Hijacked

Meanwhile, the police and Army have carried out an extensive search operation in north Belfast following the car bomb on Sunday.

The bombers hijacked a car in Ardoyne, north Belfast, and forced the driver to take the bomb to Victoria Square shopping centre in the city centre.

On Tuesday morning, police cordoned off Jamaica Street where the driver's car was hijacked.

They conducted door-to-door enquiries.

One eyewitness said that up to 20 police officers, accompanied by about 10 soldiers and an Army bomb disposal team, arrived in the area on Tuesday morning.

Officers looked under vehicles and over garden fences during the operation, which lasted for several hours.

A police spokesman said: "Police carried out a search operation in the Jamaica Street area of north Belfast in relation to the investigation into the explosive device at Victoria Street on Sunday 24 November."

The explosion was the first attempted car bombing in central Belfast for several years and dissident republican paramilitaries have been blamed for the attack.

Logan suspended for Benghazi report

26 November 2013 Last updated at 15:52 ET

CBS has suspended star reporter Lara Logan and a producer for an erroneous 60 Minutes report about the attack on a US diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya.

Logan and producer Max McClellan ran an interview with a security contractor who was later discredited by the FBI. Ms Logan later called it a "mistake".

CBS News Chairman Jeff Fager said: "This deception got through and it shouldn't have."

The network's internal review of the incident censured the report.

Its inquiry found the 60 Minutes team should have done a more thorough job vetting the information provided by security contractor Dylan Davies.

'We were wrong'

He initially reported that he had witnessed the 11 September 2012 attack, fought off an assailant, and later saw the body of US Ambassador Christopher Stevens.

But other news outlets later revealed that Mr Davies had told FBI investigators and his employers he was not at the Benghazi compound on the night of the attack.

The CBS News internal review also determined Ms Logan should not have done the story at all after making a speech in Chicago claiming it was untrue that the US military had suppressed al-Qaeda.

Logan, who faces a forced leave of absence of undetermined length, apologised for the incident soon after the report's initial 27 October airing.

"The most important thing to every person at 60 Minutes is the truth, and today the truth is we made a mistake," Logan told a CBS morning news programme on 8 November.

'Eyewitness account'

Publication of a book written by Mr Davies about the 2012 attack was also halted the same day.

Threshold Editions suspended publication of The Embassy House: The Explosive Eyewitness Account of the Libyan Embassy Siege by the Soldier Who Was There.

The book, written under the pseudonym Sgt Morgan Jones, was released on 29 October.

The attack against the US consulate - which resulted in the death of Mr Stevens, another state department worker, and two former Navy Seals - was originally said to have sprung out of protests against an anti-Islam film produced in the US.

It was later acknowledged by US officials to have been an organised, pre-planned assault by militia forces.

The US filed charges against a Libyan militia chief, Ahmed Abu Khattala, in August. An unknown number of other alleged attackers have also been charged.

Republicans denounced President Barack Obama's handling of the incident, accusing his administration among other things of downplaying the attack in order to protect his 2012 re-election campaign.

Logan, a high-profile correspondent who has long covered international conflict, was reportedly the victim of a sexual assault by a mob in Egypt's Tahrir Square in February 2011.

Sears Canada to lay off hundreds

26 November 2013 Last updated at 17:36 ET

Retail chain Sears Canada has announced it is laying off nearly 800 employees, as it fights to compete with rivals like Nordstrom.

The redundancies announced on Tuesday will affect 712 staff in repair services and 79 at head office.

The company also expects to contract from 118 stores to 111 by 2015.

The layoffs will occur over the next six months and are "designed to improve efficiency, profitability and overall customer experience", the firm said.

Sears Canada, which currently has 25,000 employees, has also agreed to sell leases back to landlords for hundreds of millions of dollars as it struggles to raise cash and sell off assets, according to media reports.

Cocaine congressman resists pressure

The Republican Party of Florida is calling on disgraced congressman Trey Radel to "resign immediately" after his conviction for cocaine possession.

Chairman Lenny Curry released a statement saying that the 37-year-old should quit and "focus his attention on rehabilitation and his family".

Radel's aide said the representative, who has a taken leave of absence, would return to work as soon as possible.

He won election easily last year with the support of Tea Party activists.

But after last Wednesday's conviction in Washington DC, he was accused of hypocrisy as it was pointed out that he had recently voted for a bill containing a measure that mandated drug tests for poor Americans who apply for food aid.

The father-of-one, who was given a year's probation, blamed his mistake on a personal struggle with alcoholism and substance abuse. He also pledged to donate some of his salary to charity.

But on Tuesday, Florida Governor Rick Scott joined the growing number of Republican leaders in the state who have urged Radel to step down.

He spoke out a day after the state's party said in a statement: "We feel it is in the best interests of all involved that he [Radel] resign immediately."

Radel's aide, however, did not give any sign that the embattled politician would bow to pressure.

Spokesman Dave Natonski wrote on Tuesday in an email to the Associated Press news agency that the representative's "top priority right now is to complete his rehabilitation and then return to work as soon as possible".

Radel admitted buying 3.5g (0.12oz) of cocaine from an undercover agent on 29 October in Washington DC.

A close look at the world's most expensive printed book

A tiny book of psalms from 1640 has become the world's most expensive printed book as it was auctioned in New York for $14.2m (£8.8m).

The Bay Psalm Book is the first known book to be printed in what is now the United States.

It was published in Cambridge, Massachusetts, by the Puritan leaders of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

The book was meant to be a faithful translation into English of the original Hebrew psalms.

But it is not the most expensive book ever - that title goes to a handwritten Leonardo da Vinci notebook which sold for $30.8m in 1994.

'Spectacular'

Sotheby's, which auctioned the Bay Psalm Book on Tuesday night, said it had been bought by US financier and philanthropist David Rubenstein, who planned to loan it to libraries across the country.

  • RothschildBook of Hours: Handwritten, illustrated prayerbook. Early 16th Century. Sold for $14.3m in 1999
  • Magna Carta: Widely distributed but handwritten and unbound. Late 13th Century copy sold for $21.3m in 2007
  • Birds of America: Book of hand-coloured prints by naturalist and painter John James Audubon. Early 19th Century. Sold for $11.5m in 2010

It was sold by Boston's Old South Church, where Founding Father Benjamin Franklin was baptised and meetings that led to the Boston Tea Party were hosted.

It is one of 11 copies known to remain in existence out of about 1,700 copies originally printed.

The Old South Church has one other copy, which it says it has no plans to sell.

The other nine books are prized items in major collections or libraries.

The Reverend Nancy Taylor, senior minister of the church, said in April: "It's a spectacular book, arguably one of the most important books in this nation's history."

Numerous mistakes

A copy of the Bay Psalm Book set a record in 1947 when it sold for $151,000, dwarfing prices paid around the same time for a Gutenberg Bible and a Shakespeare First Folio.

The Bay Psalm Book has achieved its status despite criticism early on about its quality.

The inking of the type is uneven, and there are numerous printing mistakes.

The top of the left-hand page carries the word "psalm" and a number in Roman numerals, but on the right hand page it appears as "psalme". Inverted commas are used in place of apostrophes.

Publisher and author Isaiah Thomas noted 200 years ago that it "abounds with typographical errors" and "does not exhibit the appearance of good workmanship. The compositor must have been wholly unacquainted with punctuation."

Thanksgiving travellers face storm

26 November 2013 Last updated at 23:27 ET

A US winter storm blamed for up to a dozen deaths is threatening to bring travel misery to the East Coast on the eve of the Thanksgiving holiday.

The system, which dumped heavy rain and snow over the region on Tuesday, has already caused some flight delays.

Forecasters say more than 1ft (30cm) of snow could fall in western Pennsylvania, western New York and Vermont before Thursday.

More than 43 million Americans are expected to travel during the holiday.

The storm is also threatening to ground the giant balloons at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York.

City regulations bar the inflatables from being used when sustained winds exceed 23mph (37km/h) or when gusts top 34mph.

The balloons of beloved characters such as Mickey Mouse and the Pillsbury Doughboy are due to be made ready on Wednesday evening.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has issued a winter weather warning, urging motorists to use extreme caution.

Meteorologists also predict the storm could bring 2-4in (5-10cm) of rain up the Atlantic coast from Richmond, Virginia, to Portland, Maine.

"It couldn't have come at a worse time," said meteorologist Tim Morrin, of the National Weather Service.

"Visibility will be restricted not only by the rain and wash from other cars, but from the fog."

Late on Tuesday, flight delays were reported in Charlotte, North Carolina; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Memphis, Tennessee; and Baltimore, Maryland.

Daniel Baker, of flight-tracking service FlightAware, said that most airlines expect to continue operating full schedules, although further delays were likely.

Some travellers were getting on earlier flights to avoid ending up stranded.

Lisa Jablon was originally due to fly on Wednesday morning from New York City to Syracuse, New York state, but she moved her flight to Tuesday night.

"I'm flying up to spend the holiday with my boyfriend's family and I didn't want to get stuck," she told the Associated Press news agency.

The icy weather started in the western states and has caused at least 10 fatal road crashes.

Deaths from weather-related accidents were reported in the US states of Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and California.

Thanksgiving Day celebrates the harvest and blessings of the past year.

It has been marked for hundreds of years, and is generally thought to commemorate a 1621 harvest feast the pilgrims shared with Indians after settling at Plymouth, in what is now Massachusetts.

The modern festival sees millions of people travel to be with family, eat turkey feasts, watch NFL football matches and - in recent years - plan or even begin their assault on the holiday sales.
